Reflection of Primer Project

This was a nice project to start the Graphic Design specialism because it was so open for us to create whatever we wanted on a flag that represented ourselves. There were not much boundaries which kind of made me lost to start with but slowly I got ideas in after doing the researches which aided me with my final outcome. I was inspired by one of the flags I saw in the 'My Island Flag' research that used calligraphy. I related it to my roots & parts of my identity and incorporated to a simple design. My first design was similar to my final outcome but I felt it was too complicated and time consuming so I chose the simpler yet effective design I came up with. It's based on Chinese seals that uses ancient characters so I converted my name to them with a generator. It's really interesting as you can see the difference between what my name looks like in simplified characters (紫薇) to these ancient characters that are only used in seals. They are influenced by nature which is why they are so stylised. The red really strikes against the plain fabric (which I tried to resemble to traditional/scroll paper) so viewers will be able to notice it right away from far. As they go closer they will notice the little basic facts I've wrote about myself (some as symbols for them to figure out) in order for them to engage with the flag instead of just look & go. I'm glad that people found it cool and engaged with the words I put within the Chinese stamp characters. I'd say this was a really successful start to the specialisation for me :)
